Beneplace

The University of Maryland Medical System has contracted with Beneplace, a web-based discount vendor, to offer special discounts to UMMS staff. Employee Educational Assistance Benefits

Continuing Education Program

  • The Medical Center provides the Employee Continuing Education benefit for registration fees for current job-related conferences and seminars, advanced certification exam fees, certification review course fees, tuition costs for non-credit courses that offer continuing education units (CEUs), professional dues, etc.

Tuition Reimbursement

  • The Employee Tuition Reimbursement Program is designed to provide financial assistance to employees who want to pursue courses of study related to hospital employment, to upgrade their care of patients, to prepare for advancement, and to develop and improve their capabilities.
  • The Medical Center provides tuition reimbursement for undergraduate and graduate studies that are related to an employee's current job or a hospital-related job.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

A flexible spending account (FSA) is a tax-advantaged financial account that allows an employee to set aside a portion of earnings to pay for qualified expenses (refer to Ceridian plan for details). Money deducted from an employee's pay into an FSA is not subject to payroll taxes, resulting in substantial payroll tax savings. One significant disadvantage to using an FSA is that funds not used by the end of the plan year are lost to the employee, known as the "use it or lose it" rule.

NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program

HRSA and Nurse Corps

The HRSA Loan Repayment Program is a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of nurses by offering loan repayment assistance to registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses, such as nurse practitioners, in return for working in a Critical Shortage Facility. The newly named "NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program" comprises the Nursing Education Loan Repayment and Nursing Scholarship programs that have helped critical shortage facilities meet their urgent need for nurses since 2002.

In exchange for a 2-year service commitment, participants receive 60 percent of their total qualifying nursing education loan balance. For an optional third year of service, participants may receive 25 percent of their original total qualifying nursing education loan balance.

Federal Perkins Loan Program

Department of EducationThe Federal Perkins Loan Program provides low interest loans to help needy students finance the costs of postsecondary education. Students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of the application process for a Perkins Loan.
