There are many ways to get involved at the Medical Center! Below are some UMMC initiatives you can ask your manager about or search for on the UMMC Intranet. Be sure to ask your co-workers how they have chosen to participate as an active member of the UMMC team. Make sure to see our recommendations for the best places to grab lunch on campus, and for directions around the Medical Center..

Green Team

UMMC has a multidisciplinary Green Team that works to make our Medical Center an award winning, more environmentally sustainable place to provide patient care. Contact: Justin Graves, Sustainability Coordinator.


University of Maryland HS/HSL Library

As an employee of the Medical Center, you have access to the Health Sciences and Human Services Library located across from the hospital in the Southern Management Campus Center. Visit the information desk to get your code for computer access and utilize the numerous online databases as well as journals and text books.


C2X: Commitment To Excellence

UMMC staff live by our Commitment to Excellence* standards, and we look forward to UMMC's C2X forums (town meetings) that are held with senior leadership. Be sure to attend the C2X Forums, sign up to be a liaison for your unit, or join one of the many C2X Teams! C2X Teams include: Patient Experience; Celebrations; Employee Engagement; Healing Arts; Communications. Contact:  Kerry Sobol, Director.

Nursing & Patient Care Services Governance Councils

UMMC's Nursing & PCS Governance Councils coordinate the decision making process related to clinical practice, staff and patient education, and patient care. The 10 councils and 15 subgroups include representation from a wide range of departments including Pharmacy and Information Technology, in addition to every nursing unit. Manager approval required prior to involvement with these councils. Contact: Tia Milburn, Project Specialist.


Unit Level Councils

Every division and unit has unique needs and committees. Ask your manager about getting involved at the unit level.


United Way Campaign

UMMC partners with the United Way each year to run a campaign with promotional events and educational sessions. Sign up to be an ambassador for your unit, join the United Way Planning Committee, or support the United Way campaign events that take place at the hospital. Contact: United Way.

Remember, you can certainly be involved without joining a council or a team. here are some ways:

Farmer's Market

The Farmer’s Market visits UMMC every Tuesday during the months of May through November in the Plaza Park located off Greene Street between Baltimore Street and Redwood Street. Support the vendors and chat with your colleagues!


Ongoing Education

Keep your eyes peeled for the many conferences and workshops that are offered year round.

The EAP offers free, confidential counseling and referral service for employees and their family members, including problems related to stress, depression, anxiety, grief, marital and family assessment, and career planning.

Step Up to Good Health

You don’t need to participate in UMMC’s healthcare benefits plan to get involved with Step Up To Good Health! Keep your eyes peeled for free lunch and learn workshops. Contact: Employee Health Department.


Nurses Week

Nurses Week coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale and is celebrated annually at UMMC. Nursing staff are welcome to participate on the planning committee. Numerous events are held to honor our nurses throughout the week, which include:

Healing Arts Exhibit for Employees & Their Families

The C2X Team Healing Arts Team* has partnered with the National Arts Program® to host the second annual employee art exhibition and awards reception at UMMC on October 2, 2014. All UMMC employees, physicians, and their immediately family members are invited to exhibit their artwork and compete for cash prizes sponsored by the National Arts Program® in the following categories: Amateur Adult, Intermediate Adult, Professional Adult, Youth 12 & Under and Teen 13-18. There is no entry fee, but all entries must be the original work of the applicant, completed within the last three years. The Exhibit runs from September 29th until November 4th. Be sure to participate and explore your coworker's contributions!

Pastoral Care Services

All patients, staff and/or family members who need support are encouraged to use Pastoral Care Services* available at the Medical Center. The Interfaith Chapel, located on the ground floor in the Weinberg Atrium, hosts regular services while offering a safe place for spiritual care. To reach a chaplain at any time, use the hospital pager system #4659 (HOLY) or via telephone from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 410-328-6014.
